If your Massachusetts vehicle registration is about to expire, renewing it online is usually the fastest and easiest option.

Most vehicle owners can complete their registration renewal through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) website in just a few minutes.

In this guide, we’ll explain who can renew online, what you’ll need, common reasons a renewal may be blocked, and what to do if you don’t receive your new registration or decal.

Can I Renew My Registration Online?

In most cases, yes. Massachusetts allows vehicle owners to renew vehicle and trailer registrations online through the RMV.

To renew online, you must:

  • Have an active vehicle registration
  • Have an active insurance policy on file with the RMV
  • Be eligible to renew your registration

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, have the following available:

  • Your registration information
  • A valid payment method
  • Your MyMassGov account login, if applicable

If you do not have a Massachusetts driver’s license or Massachusetts ID, you may still be able to renew online by selecting the guest option and entering your plate number and plate type.

After completing your renewal, the RMV will mail your registration certificate and plate decal.

How Long Does It Take to Receive My Registration?

If you renew online or by mail, allow at least 14 business days to receive your registration and plate decal in the mail.

If you renew in person, you will generally receive them once your transaction is processed.

Why Can’t I Renew My Registration?

There are several common reasons why the RMV may prevent a renewal.

Your Insurance Is Not Active

The RMV requires an active insurance policy on file.

If your insurance is not active or cannot be verified, your renewal may be blocked until proof of insurance is provided.

Current Risman clients should contact our office if they receive an insurance-related renewal error.

Outstanding Violations

You may be unable to renew if you have:

    • Unpaid parking tickets
    • Outstanding excise tax obligations
    • EZ-Pass violations

Registration Suspension or Revocation

The RMV will not process a renewal if your registration is suspended or revoked.

You can check your registration status online here: Check Registration Status

Leased Vehicle Renewals

If your vehicle is leased, the renewal application is generally sent to the leasing company.

You should obtain the renewal paperwork from the leasing company and renew using one of the available RMV methods.

Once processed:

    • The new registration and plate decal will be mailed to you
    • A copy of the registration will be sent to the leasing company

Registration Fees

Registration fees vary depending on the plate type and registration class.
