If your vehicle lease is ending, you may be considering purchasing the vehicle rather than returning it to the dealership. For many drivers, a lease buyout can be a cost-effective option, especially if the vehicle is in good condition and its market value exceeds the buyout price.

If you’re buying out your leased vehicle in Massachusetts, here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Lease Buyout?

A lease buyout occurs when you purchase the vehicle you have been leasing from the leasing company. Once the transaction is complete, ownership transfers from the leasing company to you.

Because ownership is changing, the vehicle must be titled and registered in your name.

Documents You’ll Need

The leasing company will typically provide a package containing the documents needed to complete the transfer.

These may include:

  • Title or Certificate of Title
  • Title Reassignment Document
  • Bill of Sale or Purchase Agreement
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • Lien Release (if applicable)

Once you receive your documents, it’s a good idea to have them reviewed before scheduling a trip to the RMV.

Can I Keep My Current License Plates?

In many lease buyout transactions, yes.

If you wish to keep your current Massachusetts license plates, you will typically need a letter from the leasing company authorizing the release of the plates to you.

The requirements can vary depending on the leasing company and how the transaction is structured, so it’s important to verify this early in the process.

What If I’m Financing the Buyout?

If you’re taking out a loan to purchase the vehicle, your lender will typically require:

  • An insurance binder
  • Proof that they have been listed as lienholder on your auto insurance policy
  • Registration and Title Application (RTA) listing them as lienholder

Providing your lender’s contact information to your insurance agency early in the process can help avoid delays.

How Does Registration Work?

Once ownership transfers from the leasing company to you, the vehicle must be registered in your name.

There are generally two options:

Option 1: Have Your Insurance Agency Assist

Many insurance agencies, including Risman Insurance Agencies, can help prepare your Registration and Title Application (RTA), review your documents, and assist with the registration process.

Depending on the office location, services may include:

  • Registry runner service
  • Registration processing assistance
  • In-office registry transactions
  • Immediate plate issuance at select locations

Option 2: Visit the RMV Yourself

If you plan to visit the RMV, your insurance agency can typically prepare and electronically stamp the Registration and Title Application (RTA) and advise you on the documents required for your appointment.

Do I Need a New Inspection Sticker?

Yes. Massachusetts requires vehicles to be inspected within 7 days of registration.

Common Lease Buyout Mistakes

To help avoid delays, make sure you:

  • Review your documents as soon as they arrive
  • Confirm whether you need a plate release letter
  • Provide lender information early if financing the buyout
  • Verify that all ownership documents are included
  • Schedule your registration promptly once the paperwork is ready
