Planning to complete a transaction through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles online? There is an important login change to know about before you begin.
The Massachusetts RMV now requires a MyMassGov Personal Account to access most individual myRMV online services. If you have not visited the RMV website recently, the new sign-in process may come as a surprise.
Creating an account ahead of time can help you avoid an unexpected delay when you need to renew, replace, update, or access information through the RMV’s Online Service Center.
Quick Answer: Do You Need MyMassGov to Use the Massachusetts RMV Online?
You need a MyMassGov Personal Account for most individual myRMV online services.
When you choose a transaction in the RMV Online Service Center, you will be directed to MyMassGov if the service requires you to sign in. The first time you access myRMV with MyMassGov, you will also need to complete a one-time identity verification process.
Not every RMV service requires a login, but creating your account before you need it can make your next online transaction easier.
What Is MyMassGov?
MyMassGov is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ secure sign-in system for participating state services and applications.
It allows Massachusetts residents to use one account to access multiple participating government services. MyMassGov also uses multifactor authentication, commonly called MFA, to provide an additional layer of account security.
Your email address becomes your MyMassGov username, and you may be asked to enter a security code in addition to your password when signing in.
What Changed With the myRMV Login?
Previously, many residents accessed their RMV information through the myRMV system without first creating a MyMassGov account.
Now, most individual myRMV online services use MyMassGov as the login system. When a selected RMV transaction requires authentication, you will be prompted to:
- Sign in with an existing MyMassGov Personal Account; or
- Create a new MyMassGov Personal Account.
After signing in for the first time, you will return to myRMV to verify your identity and connect your RMV information.
Which RMV Services May Require MyMassGov?
The Massachusetts RMV provides more than 60 online transactions through its Online Service Center. Many individual services that require a user to sign in now use MyMassGov.
Depending on the transaction and your eligibility, online RMV services may include:
- Renewing a Massachusetts driver’s license or Mass ID
- Renewing, amending, or replacing a vehicle registration
- Checking the status of a license, identification card, registration, or title
- Requesting certain replacement documents
- Updating eligible personal or vehicle information
- Accessing other services through your myRMV profile
Start by selecting the service you need through the RMV Online Service Center. If MyMassGov is required, the RMV will direct you to the appropriate login page.
How to Create a MyMassGov Personal Account
Creating a MyMassGov Personal Account is free. Before beginning, make sure you have:
- A valid email address that you can access
- Your legal first and last name
- A password that meets the account security requirements
- A smartphone, mobile phone, or landline for multifactor authentication
Massachusetts recommends using an individual email address rather than a joint or shared account. The email address you provide will become your MyMassGov username.

- Select the Personal account option.
- Choose “Create an Account.”
- Enter your email address.
- Retrieve the one-time verification code sent to your email.
- Enter your legal name and create a password.
- Set up multifactor authentication.
Multifactor authentication codes can be provided through an authentication app, text message, or telephone call.

What Happens the First Time You Log In to myRMV With MyMassGov?
Creating a MyMassGov account is only the first part of the initial setup.
The first time you use MyMassGov to access myRMV, you will be asked to verify your identity. According to the RMV, you should be prepared to enter information that may include:
- Your date of birth
- Your last name
- Your Massachusetts license, permit, or identification number
- The last four digits of your Social Security number or another accepted identification number
If you already have a myRMV profile, the RMV may send a security code using the email address, telephone number, or authentication method associated with that profile.
If you cannot access the security code or are using myRMV online services for the first time, you may need a Letter ID from the RMV.
Once the verification process is completed successfully, you can continue with your selected transaction.
Already Have a MyMassGov Account?
You do not need to create another Personal Account solely for the RMV.
MyMassGov is designed to let you connect one account with multiple participating Massachusetts services. Sign in using your existing MyMassGov email address and password, and then follow the RMV instructions to complete the one-time verification process.
What About MyMassGov Business Accounts?
MyMassGov also offers Business Accounts for companies and individuals accessing participating state services for work or business purposes.
Personal and Business Accounts are separate. If you need both account types, you must create separate accounts, and Massachusetts recommends using a work email address for your Business Account.
However, businesses should not assume that a MyMassGov Business Account is required for every business-related RMV transaction. The RMV states that authorized business partners may continue accessing myRMV transactions through their existing authorized login methods without a MyMassGov account.

Common MyMassGov and myRMV Questions
Is MyMassGov the same as myRMV?
No. MyMassGov is the secure account and login system. myRMV is the RMV’s online service platform. For most individual online services that require authentication, you use MyMassGov to sign in to myRMV.
Can two family members share one MyMassGov account?
Massachusetts advises users not to create an account with a joint or shared email address. Each person should create an individual Personal Account using an email address they can access.
Can I use a MyMassGov account I created for another state service?
Yes. If you already have a MyMassGov Personal Account, you can use it to connect with additional participating services, including myRMV. You may still need to complete the RMV’s one-time identity verification process.
What if I forgot my MyMassGov password?
Select the “Forgot password” option on the MyMassGov login screen and follow the instructions to reset it.
Why am I being asked for a Letter ID?
A Letter ID may be required if you are accessing myRMV online services for the first time or cannot receive a security code through the contact information associated with your existing profile. Follow the instructions provided by the RMV to request or enter the Letter ID.
Does every Massachusetts RMV transaction require MyMassGov?
No. The RMV specifies that MyMassGov is required for most individual myRMV online services. Select your transaction through the RMV Online Service Center, and you will be directed to MyMassGov when a login is required.
Can I complete an RMV transaction without going online?
Some transactions may be available through an RMV Service Center, AAA location, insurance agency, dealership, mail, or another approved method. The available options depend on the type of transaction and your eligibility.
