Quick Answer

Massachusetts does allow homemade trailers to be registered, even if they do not have an existing VIN or title. The process depends largely on the trailer’s weight and the documentation you can provide showing how the trailer was built.

You Built a Trailer. Now What?

One of the most common questions we hear is how to register a homemade trailer that does not have a VIN number, title, or manufacturer’s certificate of origin.

It is a fair question. When you buy a trailer from a dealership or manufacturer, there is usually paperwork that clearly identifies the trailer. With a homemade trailer, you may only have receipts, parts, materials, and the finished product sitting in your driveway.

The good news is that Massachusetts does provide a process for registering homemade trailers. The key is being prepared before you visit the RMV.

Please Note

This article is intended as general guidance based on our experience assisting Massachusetts clients. Registration requirements may vary depending on your specific situation, and all documentation is reviewed at the discretion of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. The RMV may request additional information before issuing a registration.

What Is Considered a Homemade Trailer?

A homemade trailer is typically a trailer that was built or assembled by an individual rather than manufactured and sold by a dealership or trailer manufacturer.

This may include small utility trailers, ATV trailers, landscaping trailers, boat trailers, or other trailers built from individual parts or used components.

Because the trailer was not commercially manufactured, it may not have a traditional VIN, title, or manufacturer’s certificate of origin. That is why the RMV will generally want documentation showing where the parts came from and how the trailer was constructed.

Step 1: Gather Your Documentation

Since there is no title to prove ownership, you will need to show ownership of the materials used to build the trailer. This helps the RMV verify that the trailer was properly constructed from parts you own.

We Recommend Bringing:

  • A list of the materials used to build the trailer
  • The approximate cost of each item
  • Receipts, if available
  • Bills of sale for any used components
  • Photos taken during construction, if available

Risman Tip

Do not overthink the materials list. We typically recommend creating a simple typed list of the materials used to build the trailer along with the approximate cost of each item. It does not have to be an official document. It is simply a way to document what was used to build the trailer.

Step 2: Determine the Trailer’s Weight

One of the most important details is the trailer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, often referred to as GVWR. This matters because Massachusetts treats trailers differently depending on whether they are over or under 3,000 pounds GVWR.

3,000 lbs GVWR or Less

  • A Massachusetts-assigned VIN is typically not required.
  • The RMV may issue a Pseudo VIN for registration purposes.
  • The registration process is usually more straightforward.

Over 3,000 lbs GVWR

  • A Massachusetts-assigned VIN is generally required.
  • A State Police inspection is required.
  • Ownership of the trailer and major components will be verified.

What If You Do Not Have Every Receipt?

That is okay. Receipts are helpful, but they are not always available, especially if the trailer was built over time or from a mix of new and used parts.

At a minimum, we recommend preparing a list of the major materials and components used. Include items such as the frame, axle, wheels, tires, lights, wiring, coupler, fenders, and any other major components. Add an approximate cost for each item.

Bring any receipts or bills of sale you do have. The more documentation you can provide, the smoother the process is likely to be.

Step 3: Complete the Registration Paperwork

To register the trailer, you will need to complete the Massachusetts Registration and Title Application and provide the required supporting documentation.

If the trailer is over 3,000 pounds GVWR and requires a Massachusetts-assigned VIN, that process generally needs to be completed before the trailer can be registered.

What Happens at the RMV?

The RMV will review your paperwork, documentation, and any applicable VIN requirements. Depending on the trailer and the information provided, the RMV may issue a registration, plate, and, if applicable, a title.

Every situation can be a little different. That is why it is important to bring as much documentation as possible and understand that the final decision rests with the RMV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I register a homemade trailer without a title?

Yes, in many cases. Since homemade trailers typically do not have an existing title, you will provide documentation showing ownership of the materials used to build the trailer.

Can I register a homemade trailer without a VIN?

It depends on the trailer’s GVWR. Trailers 3,000 pounds GVWR or less may be registered using a Pseudo VIN issued by the RMV. Trailers over 3,000 pounds GVWR generally require a Massachusetts-assigned VIN.

Do I need receipts for every part?

Not necessarily. Receipts are helpful, but if you do not have all of them, prepare a simple list of the materials used and their approximate cost. Bring whatever supporting documentation you do have.

Who makes the final decision?

The Massachusetts RMV makes the final decision. This article is meant to help you prepare, but requirements may vary depending on the trailer and documentation provided.
